Roughly hand embroidered borders on a piece of dark cream calico fabric that is inset with a hand-painted black wooden fireguard that is also covered with a glass inset and hand painted gold inlay.
The piece represents the cross-stitching times and post-industrial times of coal that Jane Austen would of may experience within her home life. Artist Bridget Evans takes a trip into the 1980s where the industry had fell under Thatcherism and women rights become more empowered. Cross stitching coal guards domestically had become a past hobby as Jane Austen Books still reached a best seller within of the home and hobbies that lie.
