DECRYPT SHOW
The Decrypt Show took place in The Crypt Gallery of Euston, London. The gallery was a underneath tomb. The decrypt title was a spin-off of the "alt text" exhibition that happened earlier on within the year. The whole university masters end of year show was shown in this unusual exhibit space.
The whole decrypt show was taken part in the underground space, but sadly I did not take part due to unseen circumstances. However, I did contribute artwork to what was the Decrypt show.
The Decrypt layout is very tombed and the proposal I prepared was well matched to the brief and exhibition space. The tomb is quite dark and lighting is scattered about to create shadows and detailing of a dark area.
The link above provides a look into the CRYPT GALLERY. The gallery is on a 3D viewing with this download to see the inside of the space. The space has tombstones and areas of darkness. The tombstones and areas of darkness give the whole concept of the gallery space that eerie and uncertain to go into and explore.
The whole area of Euston, was unfamiliar, however London is a central place of the United Kingdom. The whole choice of this was because it was accessible. The fees to exhibit here were fairly average. The location was also a great place as it was central.
The decrypt ideas are shown below by International Welsh Artist Bridget Evans. Many of the artists took part of the work shown, and so the work of Bridget Evans was not shown as she was not present at the exhibition.

The exhibition idea was to have a video screened on a hanging shower curtain from a rail. The rail and shower curtain are hang from the ceiling and the projector shines on the curtain for the effect of the light and video to be seen. The video is played via a projector onto the curtain screen.
The silver metal tubed curtain rail that hang from the rounded bricked ceiling of the Crypt Gallery would be suspend the shower curtain to the floor. The shower curtain would be a thick ecru white and made of a thick cotton style plastic that people could see the projection on.
The projection video would project film imagery onto the curtain of the video recorded for the gallery exhibition. The video shows a shower/bathroom setting of the shower on, pouring water over onto a lump of sooty and dirty coal. The dirty coal would turn the water black and pour around the coal puddle and exit the drainage.

The video is focused on sound and imagery. This imagery was of the shower and coal becoming wet. So, the idea was to show the coal as dirty and then getting cleaned. The water would be a sooty grey that would stick and run into the drain. The drain is placed inside the bathroom setting as well as a electric shower.
The traditional mechanical shower would of been an idea, however a electric ones shows the relationship between two energy resources: coal and electric. Coal and electrics relationship I can only persume is close.
The coal and electric need each other. Coal supplies electric and electric runs on coal! The relationship is sadly non-existent anymore as electric relies on other resources. The work really would be great shown in the exhibition.

The whole exhibition of decrypt was a inspiration to show this particular piece of work. With the projector placing the image onto the shower curtain it really does give an authentic feel of artwork.
The work is really different. It shows the creativity of Bridget's Ideas to address the relationship that coal has with everyday domestic objects and utilities. This relationship was one of value and quality and now longer exist as they have roles completely different now.
Finally, The coal is dirty. The water washes the coal and tries to clean this soot off the rock and piece of fossil. The idea was accepted by the group and sadly never came to be exhibited due to illness.
