Subtext is a exhibition held at Jane Austen House in Chawton, Hampshire, England. The exhibition was held between March and April 2022. The name of the Exhibition was chosen as a group opinion and individually we all created our pieces of work.
The works that Bridget Evans created was also shown within the group exhibition. Here is the link for the work that was shown below:
COAL THROUGH OUR VEINS
The Coal through veins was made from a coal fire guard. The antique guard was revamped to give the artistic view of what International welsh artist Bridget Evans wanted to achieve.

The design was to represent the colliery. The sheet of fabric was made to look old and wrinkled within the coal guard. Then, there was a drawing of a colliery and handstitched work around it with sequins and black silk thread.
The design was also drawn on, with pen stating a flamboyant quote from the eighties strikes involving coal. "COAL NOT DOLE", states that the industry is getting closed down and struggling to survive the wave of closures.
With this combination of explanation, the guard also has many different prospective. The coal guard was designed to protect the clothing of Jane Austen, who sat at the fire and wrote her famous works.
The needlework would of been one of Jane Austens hobbies amongst writing - which again tie into the workmanship of Bridget Evans art piece and its embroidery. The black thread and sequin detailing really sets the work off.
The whole exhibition took place within the Jane Austen House and in Chawton. The picturesque village stands in the middle of hampshire and so the work that Bridget created was in time keeping with the house.
